Why you’re doing Instagram all wrong

June 15, 2016

Instagram is perhaps one of my personal favourite Social Networking platforms. I mean, what’s not to love, right? It’s a window into other people’s daily lives, and if you’re like me, that’s super interesting.

However, did you know you may be doing Instagram all wrong?

Moments, not Photos

Instagram is designed for sharing photos, sure, but that’s not what it represents. Each photo shared on Instagram is a moment in your life shared with the world.

Think about Instagram as one of your old photo albums with the important events from your life. I know that I’m going slightly old fashioned on you, but bear with me with this metaphor. In those old photo albums your mum and dad have, there aren’t really selfies, it’s more birthdays and Christmases.

I see Instagram as a digital old timey photo album. Each photo you share is a moment from your life, even if it’s not that much of an important event, you’re sharing moments from your daily life.

Choose your theme

Your theme is important. There are Instagram accounts targeted at dog lovers, at cat lovers, and food lovers, to name a few. If the foodie accounts started posting pictures of cats, they would not only divide their audience but, perhaps start losing following and pollute their brand.

Rick Ross is one of my favourite Instagram accounts, he shares moments from his life, every post is interesting and engaging. On the other side of the coin we have accounts such as Justin Bieber, one of the most famous people on Instagram, however, his feed is basically all of one thing. Selfies. That’s fine if you’re Justin Beiber with an army of fans, but it’s rarely fine for you. Selfies are such an oversaturated market, anyway.

Quality, not quantity

I know that the band that you saw last night were amazing, but you’ll get a lot more exposure if you spread out the posts than if you were to post them all at once. Post a photo, then wait. Post a photo, then wait.

Diversify

I recently came across an Instagram account where the first 10 photos “above the fold” all looked identical, and that’s not visually appealing at all. You need to diversify your photos, if they look the same then your feed looks boring.

Moments. Theme. Quality. Diversity. With these simple steps you will be well on your way to Instagram success. 🙂
